Associate Professor / Adjunct Professor within Computer Science at NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY – NTNU
About the position
In the Department of ICT and Natural Sciences, there are up to two Associate Professor (Førstelektor) / Assistant Professor (Universitetslektor) positions in Computer Science.
The positions are linked to the bachelor’s program in computer science (BIDATA) and the master’s program in simulation and visualization. Additionally, our staff conduct research through the Sustainable Digital Transformation Group (SDT) research group.
You will report to the Head of Department.
As an employee, you will prepare your own teaching and supervise according to the BIDATA study profile and content. The study is profession-focused and emphasizes modern teaching methods such as formative assessment, algorithmic thinking, constructive teaching through increased use of laboratory teaching.
In this position, you will be particularly relevant to teach in courses such as: programming, operational systems, information security, mobile applications, computer graphics, algorithms and data structures. Other courses may also be relevant. You must also supervise the students in their dissertations for their bachelor’s and master’s degrees. In addition, you must coordinate internal projects, undergraduate theses and specialization projects.
It is expected that part of your work plan will relate to research and development that strengthens our study programs, the strategic effort of the SDT group and the department.
Selection criteria required
The position of Associate Professor (førstelektor) in Computer Science requires that you meet the criteria of the Regulations for Appointment and Promotion to Teaching and Research Positions, Section 1-5.
The position of Assistant Professor (universitetslektor) in Computer Science requires that you meet the criteria of the Regulations for Appointment and Promotion to Teaching and Research Positions, Section 1-6.
- Master’s degree in computer science or equivalent
- You must teach in at least two of the following courses: Programming, Operational Systems, Information Security, Mobile Applications, Computer Graphics, Algorithms and Data Structures or similar
- Relevant and recent experience in the development of modern systems and agile methods is required.
- Good written and oral skills in English and/or Norwegian. It is an advantage with good skills in both languages.
New employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language by appointment are required, within three years, to demonstrate proficiency in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three of the Norwegian course for speakers of other languages at NTNU Department of Language and Literature.
You must document the relevant basic teaching and supervision skills at university/higher level as stated in the Norwegian national regulations. If this cannot be documented, you will be required to take an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.

- Relevant industrial experience
- It is relevant if you can teach other courses on BIDATA and SimVis
- It is an advantage to know the Norwegian education system with the competence expected of students from the three sources (Samordna opptak, Y-vei, TRES)
- Communicator: able to transmit information in a simple and easy way, both in writing and orally
- Take initiative: able to see possibilities, initiate activities and projects
- Team player: working with colleagues, students in an efficient and pleasant way
- Enthusiastic: Ready for the next step to engage all students and maintain dialogue with them
- Willingness to learn: engage in the development of one’s own skills and openness to learning from experience and feedback.

Salary and conditions
The position is remunerated as Associate Professor (code 1198) or Assistant Professor (code 1009) depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian civil service pension fund.
The engagement must be carried out in accordance with the regulations in force concerning employees and civil servants of the State and the laws relating to the control of the export of strategic goods, services and technologies. Candidates who, after evaluation of the application and attachment, are found to conflict with the criteria of the latter Act will be barred from recruitment at NTNU. After the appointment, you should assume that there may be changes in the working area.

Joint work will be considered. If it is difficult to identify your contribution to joint work, you must attach a brief description of your participation.
In evaluating the most qualified candidate, we will emphasize education, experience and personal qualities as well as your motivation for the position. You will be expected to provide high quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and undertake supervision. Assessment of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Candidates with teaching experience at the university level are preferred. The quality and extent of teaching qualifications will be assessed.
