Royal Holloway’s Computer Science Department is seeking to appoint several academic staff to support its research and teaching.

We conduct outstanding research and offer excellent education at undergraduate and postgraduate level: we ranked 11e in the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) for the quality of our research results, and in education, we are generally in the top 10 in the UK for graduate prospects (e.g. Guardian 2022).

Over the past seven years, we have embarked on an ambitious expansion plan: eighteen new academic staff have been appointed, new undergraduate and integrated master’s programs have been created, and several new teaching programs of third cycle have been launched. We have strong research groups in the general areas of intelligent systems, machine learning, algorithms and complexity, and programming languages ​​and systems, as well as good relationship with the information security group. . We are also involved in multiple inter / multidisciplinary activities, from electrical engineering to psychology and social sciences. Our research force generates significant interest and opportunities for collaboration on the part of universities and third-tier partners.

Recently, Royal Holloway launched an “Advanced Quantum Science and Technology” research catalyst, with multiple links to the computer science, physics, mathematics and information security group, and the computer science department is seeking to strengthen its research activities through increased engagement in the catalyst.

We are therefore recruiting academic staff with research expertise in quantum computing, to complete and expand the research profile of the department. We welcome applicants with expertise in any area of ​​quantum computing including, but not limited to, quantum algorithms, quantum information theory, quantum simulation, and application areas. potentials such as quantum linear algebra and quantum machine learning. We also welcome outstanding applicants from all computer science disciplines, who can contribute to new enablers.

The successful candidate will help us seek out and seize opportunities for research funding and industrial engagement. They will hold a PhD or equivalent and will have a proven research record with a solid background in the underlying theory. Experience in fundraising, working with industry or contributing to outreach activities would also be valuable.

The person appointed will be expected to contribute to the full range of activities of the department, including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and oversight of general projects on a wide range of subjects. In particular, the duties and responsibilities of this post include: conducting individual or collaborative research projects; produce high-quality results for publication in high-level journals or conference proceedings; apply for research funding; provide high quality education to all levels of students; mentor postgraduate research students.

This is a full-time and permanent position (incumbent), available from April 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is based in Egham, Surrey, a short distance from London, Europe’s most dynamic technology hub.
