The Energy Studies Institute (ESI) is a research institute of the National University of Singapore that seeks to advance understanding of energy policy issues by conducting independent research and analysis. We are looking for researchers to join a multidisciplinary team conducting research projects on a range of energy issues of concern to Singapore and the region.

The Institute is looking to recruit a data and/or IT specialist at the rank of research associate. Appointed staff will operate under the responsibility of the director of the institute and will work closely with members of each of the divisions of the institute.

Candidates should be highly familiar with data analysis, visualization, and deploying modern IT techniques and workflows for upgrading and optimizing research results. An understanding of Singapore’s economic system and local work experience is desirable. The nominated candidate should also have a good knowledge of current and emerging trends in energy and environmental research.

Depending on experience and rank:

  • Develop and present ideas to the Head of Institute and senior research staff (Division Heads) on opportunities to integrate and complement contemporary computing and processing techniques into our existing research projects and workflows .
  • Explore the potential and possibly support the development of digital twin architectures for policy analysis in the context of an energy system. This would likely involve close collaboration with other systems scientists and modelers within the institute.
  • Play an active role in the elaboration of project reports, but also be ready to provide expertise to projects managed by other researchers within the institute.
  • An example where the skills of a computer scientist, for example, can be applied directly to research is the research on carbon pricing in Singapore, where blockchain technologies will be an integral part of data capture and monitoring processes. .
  • Collect, clean and analyze data on different projects, potentially involving the development of a shared database infrastructure for the institute, eg mySQL.
  • Support the development of the institute website, either hands-on or by engaging with the website administrator.
  • To assist in the technical delivery of public events, such as workshops and conferences.

The specific area of ​​work will depend on the priorities of the institute at any given time.

Terms

  • Possess a master’s degree in computer science, data science or other related fields, or possess a bachelor’s degree in finance or other related fields with at least 2 years of relevant work experience.
  • Applicants should have demonstrated experience in quantitative data analysis.
  • A good contemporary understanding and interest in energy and environmental issues.
  • Relevant professional and practical experience in industry or government agencies in the field of energy and environment in Singapore would be highly valuable.
  • A track record of publications in reputable journals would be an advantage.
  • Able to work independently and in a team.
