Jacobs University is a private, state-accredited English-language university in Bremen. We offer bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs in three schools: School of Science, School of Computing and Engineering and School of Business, Social and Decision Sciences. Our principles are first-class teaching and research, international diversity and transdisciplinary cooperation. According to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2022, Jacobs University is considered one of the top 30% of over 1,600 universities worldwide and is ranked as the most international university in ‘Germany. Among several other strategic interventions, the university is currently carrying out an ambitious expansion of digital sciences in its academic and scientific programs and activities, supported by significant new investments in personnel, research and relevant scientific equipment. This initiative aims to improve integration and interdisciplinarity between the three schools in teaching, learning and research, and to give birth to a wide range of new knowledge-based products and services generating income, improving the sustainability of the university.

Your responsibilities:
Deans are individually responsible for overseeing and managing the performance of their respective schools and sharing leadership in cross-cutting areas of undergraduate and graduate programs, research, library and laboratory services, innovation and knowledge transfer. They work in an integrated manner with the relevant university divisions, under the general supervision of the provost. The exact allocation of cross-functional responsibilities to the three holders is specified in consultation with the provost.

At present, due to the emerging strategic direction, the university needs to strengthen its internal skills in digital education, technology transfer and executive education in particular. A more detailed job description can be obtained upon request.

Your qualities:
Deans should radiate academic and intellectual gravity and display evident leadership qualities. Their academic and scientific experience and insight should be at the level where they are respected as accomplished scholars both within Jacobs University and in the wider academic community. In particular, as senior academics and managers of Jacobs University Bremen, the deans must

  • have a PhD in a relevant field, coupled with significant subsequent teaching and research experience of at least 10 years
  • demonstrate personal involvement in relevant high-level university administrative processes and leadership activities in a relevant academic or scientific institution
  • be inclined to strategic thinking and management
  • understand the economic and strategic context of academic and scientific activities in a university
  • have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and demonstrate the ability to work in teams and with teams
  • know the international structures and landscapes of higher education
  • be fluent in English, the language of instruction at Jacobs University Bremen.

The following could be of benefit to applicants:

  • formal management training
  • familiarity with the German higher education environment
  • established networks at least in their field, but a wider network in the national and international landscape of higher and scientific education is of great strategic advantage in this regard.
