Exposure to top-notch advice inspired Austin Mordahl, born in Yemen and raised in Wyoming, to merge his passions for education and computing with a doctorate. He knew the right place to do it was with his alma mater, the University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas). Having already completed his undergraduate studies with them, accumulating very little student debt in the process, but many longtime friends, he knew this was the best place to pursue his doctorate.

Mordahl’s decision turned out to be successful. “Much of my computer science doctoral program has been experience-based, in that it prepares me for my responsibilities as a future tenure-track faculty member,” he shares. In state-of-the-art classrooms, he picks up the traits that he himself hopes to one day use as an educator. He particularly commends his supervisor, Dr Shiyi Wei, for his unwavering support.

“The courses that stood out for their particularly high quality were my courses on operating systems concepts taught by Dr Ravi Prakash, artificial intelligence by Dr Vibhav Gogate and a course on special subjects taught by Dr Wei regarding program analysis, ”he enthuses.

Another day, another discovery

In fully equipped laboratories, Mordahl applies his knowledge through research. His most recent study focuses on everything Dr Wei taught him, making configurable program analysis software easier to manage and more reliable. He plans to continue to build on his findings for as long as he can. With UT Dallas, he is confident that he will develop the skills and discipline necessary to be both a competent researcher and an effective educator.

Witnessing excellence has led many students to follow suit in a number of ways. For starters, they work alongside their mentors to reach new milestones. They saw the artificial intelligence used to forecasting energy supply and demand and InfoVision used to develop an inventory system assisted by drone.

Inspired, they obtain their own distinctions. Doctor Oscar Chaparro, holder of a doctorate in software engineering, has been appointed one of two students to win last year’s David Daniel thesis prize. Graduated from PhD in Computer Science Dr. Vipin Singh Sehrawat joins Seagate as a senior engineer for cryptography and product security. Dr. Ashkan Yousefpour, another PhD in computer science, first landed the visiting scholar position at the University of California, Berkeley, before moving on to Facebook AI as a research scientist.

Other doctoral graduates then found employment in leading universities, research centers, government agencies and prestigious companies like Adobe, Amazon, Apple, Cisco, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Bank of America, among others.

Affordable education in a place full of opportunity

By choosing either a doctorate in computer science or a doctorate in software engineering, applicants join the race for a post of graduate assistant. These come with full tuition waiver and a monthly stipend of $ 1,950, which will eventually increase to $ 2,250. The department offers various other forms of scholarships and financial aid too much.
