IIT Bombay Invites Applications for Free Online Computer and Network Performance Course

IIT Bombay offers a free online course titled Introduction to Computer and Network Performance Analysis Using Queuing Systems

IIT Bombay has announced a free online course titled “Introduction to Computer and Network Performance Analysis Using Queuing Systems” which can be completed in 4 weeks. In this short course, the focus will be on the ability to reason about the asymptotic values of performance metrics at high loads and at low loads, which is very useful for validating performance test results. Additionally, the NPTEL website states that a case study on interpreting the results of load testing a simple web server using the Queuing Systems framework will be covered throughout the course.

The course will be led by Prof. Varsha Apte, a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Bombay. She works in the areas of performance analysis of computer systems and networks. She received her MSc from the University of Pune in 1989 and her PhD from Duke University in 1994, both in Computer Science. Furthermore, during the academic years 2009-2011, she was a Visiting Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Automation, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

What Will IIT Bombay Free Online Course Cover?

The course is offered because analyzing the performance of any computer or networked system is an important step in the design and deployment of such systems. Some of the topics that will be covered are:

  • Introduction, why delays occur, conflict for resources.
  • Performance metrics and parameters.
  • Introduction to the queue system: standard parameters and metrics, or Kendall notation.
  • Open Queue System Metrics.
  • Introduction to the absence of memory.
  • Laws of operation, law of use, throughput or stability of a queuing system.
  • Case study: experimental performance measurement of a web server (open load)atch.

Important Details of IIT Bombay Free Online Course

The course will run from August 22 to September 16, 2022 and an exam will take place on October 29, 2022. Fourth year undergraduate or postgraduate students in Computer Science and Engineering, or IT industry professionals engaged in testing and computer application performance evaluation can enroll in the course. Those who wish to apply are invited to go through the official website for more information.
