IT department of IIT Madras gets a new block
Mr. Subramonian Shankar (B. Tech, 1971 Batch), Founder and President, AmZetta Technologies, donated US $ 1.51 million for the construction of this building extension
Indian Institute of Technology Madras inaugurated a new three-story addition to its IT and Engineering department today (September 16, 2021).
The construction of this extension was made possible thanks to the generous financial support in the amount of US $ 1.51 million by the distinguished former student of IIT Madras, M. Subramonian Shankar (B. Tech, 1971 Batch) , founder and president of AmZetta Technologies.
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Madras currently offers B. Tech., Double degree B.Tech./M.Tech., M.Tech. MS and Ph.D. degree programs. A double degree B.Tech/M.Tech. The Data Science program, open to all B.Tech students at IIT Madras, has been offered since January 2018.
Addressing the event held today (September 16, 2021), Mr. Subramonian Shankar (B.Tech, 1971 Batch), Founder and President of AmZetta Technologies, said: “My congratulations to the IIT (Madras) for having completed the computer building despite the pandemic⦠It is the IIT (Madras) which gave me the basic pedagogical foundations which helped me to build my career. IIT has been extremely generous. IIT gave me a generous scholarship, paid for my room and my tuition. IIT had eased the financial burden on my family, which was a great relief for me. I then decided to try to see what I could do when I was able to do it.
Further, Mr. Subramonian Shankar said: “The opportunity presented itself in 2016â¦, when I was at IIT Madras for the 45th Class Reunion. I noticed that at that time, the CSE department did not have its own building. I was also impressed with some of the projects the IT department was working on, especially the SHAKTI processor which interests me a lot. The SHAKTI processor is based on open source technology, which I think will be a precursor of things to come for processors. It was very easy for me to make the decision to support IIT to have its own IT department building. “
Mr. Subramonian Shankar added, “I recently learned that IIT Madras has been ranked # 1 in India as âBest Educational Institutionâ for Higher Education by NIRF Ranking. We IIT Madras alumni would like to do everything we can to make sure that IIT Madras stays the same and that in the future the institute is also able to achieve global rankings.. “
Mr. Subramonian Shankar also contributed to the 1971 Batch Golden Reunion Fund, which supports a Merit Cum Means scholarship to cover a student’s tuition fees.
Speaking earlier, Professor Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director of IIT Madras, said: “IIT Madras was among the first to have an IT department when the field became very promising. He started in Building Sciences Block. As they grew, they used an adjacent building called the ‘Lecture Hall Complex⦒ Over the past 10 years, there has been a lot of infrastructure construction, supported by the government. The strength of the faculty has almost doubled …“
Further, Professor Bhaskar Ramamurthi said: “I am very happy and proud that Mr. Shankar has been instrumental in supporting this new infrastructure. He has made enormous contributions to the field of computer engineering. It is right that he supports this initiative. I would like to thank the engineering unit and their subcontractors as this building was completely built during the pandemic. “
Mr. Subramonian Shankar obtained his B.Tech. electrical engineering degree from IIT Madras in 1971 and master’s degree from the University of New Brunswick. Shankar received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from IIT Madras in 2000. Shankar is interested in technologies related to the computer industry.
Expressing his sincere gratitude to Mr. S. Shankar and his family at IIT Madras, Prof. Mahesh Panchagnula, Dean (Alumni and Business Relations), IIT Madras, said: “Our goal of providing continuous solutions to social problems on a global scale is achieved through the sustained support of supporters like you. We thank you for your contribution during the inauguration of this building.“

Chandra Sekhar, Head, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Madras, Prof. RG Robinson, President, Engineering Unit, IIT Madras, and Professor V. Kamakoti, Associate Dean (Industrial Council and Sponsored Research), IIT Madras, spoke at the event.
From the very beginning, Mr. Subramonian Shankar has been involved in the development and manufacture of computer hardware and integrated circuits. As hardware became more and more commoditized, with more and more added value in firmware and software, its focus and focus shifted to keep up with the new demands. Currently, in a new start-up, his goal is to develop system software products that are easily configurable, scalable and platform independent, enabling Shankar to deliver cost-effective solutions that exactly meet customer expectations.
Reaching the United States with just $ 20 in his pocket, Mr. Shankar founded American Megatrends Inc. (AMI) in 1985 in New Jersey, United States. Without venture capital funding or financial support, AMI started with zero investment. He grew the business by reinvesting his retained earnings.
