The Faculty of Engineering, University of Hong Kong is inviting applications for Professor and Head of the Computer Science Department (Ref: 513846), commencing January 1, 2023 or as soon as practicable thereafter. Appointment as head of department will be for an initial term of three years, renewable by mutual agreement.

The Faculty of Engineering, one of the two founding faculties of the University of Hong Kong, is at the forefront of engineering research and is one of the largest faculties in the University offering a wide range of undergraduate, masters and doctoral programs. diplomas. The Faculty has educated more than 19,000 undergraduate engineering graduates and 16,000 master’s and doctoral graduates. The Faculty has more than 140 professors and teachers.

The Department

The Department of Computer Science has 38 core faculty members and serves approximately 540 undergraduate students and 832 graduate students. The department offers a wide range of successful undergraduate programs including computer science, data science and engineering, financial technology, and a dual degree with the faculty of business and economics. At the graduate level, it offers master’s degrees in Computer Science, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, E-Commerce and Internet Computing, Financial Technology, and Data Analytics. Additionally, Computer Science has very active research degree programs (MPhil and PhD) covering a very wide range of topics.

The department’s research activities are broadly categorized into five main areas, namely data science and engineering; Fundamentals of Computer Science; systems and networks; artificial intelligence, robotics and visual computing; Cybersecurity, FinTech and Blockchain. The department is equipped with state-of-the-art IT facilities and has a wide range of laboratories in Artificial Intelligence, Bioinformatics Algorithm Research, Computer Networks, FinTech and Blockchain, Quantum Information Computation, etc. IT works closely with other departments. within the Faculty of Engineering as well as the Faculties of Medicine, Commerce and Economics and Law.

The role

Reporting to the Dean of Engineering, the Chief of Computing is expected to provide leadership and vision in directing and growing the department’s research and teaching missions and directing a major expansion of the department’s faculty.

The leader should possess distinguished academic degrees, with internationally recognized research achievements. He/she should preferably have relevant administrative experience. The successful candidate must also possess excellent leadership, interpersonal and communication skills.

A wide range of research funding opportunities exist both in Hong Kong and China (far exceeding most other countries) and through interactions with local, regional and international government and industry . The University is adding major new facilities in Hong Kong and nearby China. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At the current rate, payroll tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The University will contribute up to 15% of base salary to the pension plan. Housing allowances will be provided where applicable.
