Teacher. Tim CHENG appointed Vice-President for Research and Development
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today announced the appointment of Professor Tim CHENG Kwang-Ting as the new Vice President for Research and Development (VPRD), effective April 1, 2022 .
Professor Cheng, currently Dean of Engineering and Full Professor in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering and the Department of Computer and Engineering, is a leading researcher in the fields of electronic design automation ( EDA) and computer vision. During his academic career he has held several key leadership positions and has been very active in providing professional advice and services to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), of which he is a member. His work has a considerable impact and is duly recognized in the field, including 12 awards for the best article and an exceptional mention in major conferences and journals.
Professor Cheng has made significant contributions to the teaching and research programs of the School of Engineering over the past 5 years, and he has a clear vision for the advancement of research and knowledge transfer. Most recently, he led the founding of an AI Chip Center with Stanford University and other leading institutions. With seed funding of HK $ 443.9 million from the Hong Kong government’s InnoHK Clusters initiative, Professor Cheng will lead the advancement of integrated circuit design to help realize ubiquitous AI applications in society .

Mr. Liao and Prof. Shyy also took the opportunity to thank Prof. Nancy IP, who will continue to lead multiple efforts at HKUST, for her dedicated leadership, comprehensive efforts and substantial contributions to the University over the years. last years.
Prior to joining HKUST, Professor Cheng had worked at AT&T Bell Laboratories and the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB), where he held a number of leadership positions, including that of Distinguished Professor and Vice-Chancellor. Research Associate, where he helped oversee the research development, infrastructure and compliance of UCSB’s research enterprise with extramural research funding of over US $ 200 million. He has published over 500 technical papers, co-authored five books, held 12 US patents, and transferred many of his inventions into successful commercial products.
Professor Cheng’s appointment is the result of rigorous global research. To facilitate a smooth transition for him, Professor Ip’s appointment as VPRD will be extended until March 31, 2022.
