Train IT experts through project-based learning
Clarkson University is known for its academic credentials that are respected by employers. One of these programs is the new Clarkson project MS in Computer Science. The new degree offers the same intellectual rigor as the university’s research master’s thesis, but gives students more freedom to choose elective courses in accordance with employers’ requirements in the IT field.
The all-new option can be completed online, on-site at the Potsdam, New York campus, or a combination of the two – making it a flexible choice for professionals with commitments. The program is unique in that it can be customized to meet various career goals and aspirations.

The 30 credit hour program is offered by the Computer Science Department and the Electrical and Computer Engineering Departments. The collaboration ensures that students can cover a wide variety of subjects from both departments –– ranging from theory to application –– in approximately two years.
The MSc was designed to provide aspiring IT professionals with training that extends beyond the fundamentals. It explores advances in computational theory and algorithms, computer systems and networks, programming languages, software development, artificial intelligence, and applications.
Having a solid foundation in data structures and algorithms, discrete mathematics, computer organization, as well as programming will also put applicants in a good position for the MS in Computer Science program. Students from a variety of undergraduate backgrounds are welcome to apply for this forward-looking program at Clarkson, a nationally ranked university for its offerings in computer science. The master’s program in computer science has accepted students with backgrounds in chemistry, mechanical engineering, and computer engineering in recent years. Students can also take undergraduate prerequisites to fill knowledge gaps.
Students who wish to tailor their studies to their personal and professional interests can do so through the program’s project option. This project-based learning option allows them to apply research –– one of Clarkson’s strengths as a university –– directly in the field, putting theory into practice. Some projects are even carried out in corporate or government offices, thus giving inexperienced people a chance to increase their professional potential.
“For international students who want to come to the United States for their growth and professional opportunities, the final project gives them the opportunity to solve a concrete IT problem and share it with potential employers after graduation,” explains Professor Lynch.
Upon completion, international students will also have the opportunity to continue to gain industry experience in the United States. Graduates are eligible to apply for the Optional Practical Training Extension for STEM Students (STEM OPT), which could allow them to spend a total of three years working and living in the United States.
